And the use of today's available tools is increasingly turning us into a society built on an intelligent, interconnected production ecosystem. Keep reading to learn about the technologies on the rise this year!

The eight technologies changing the world

According to a survey by PwC's global Reinventing the Future project, there are eight essential technologies in the world today that are winning over businesses.

The initiative, which helps organizations discover the possibilities across every sector of the economy, aims to prepare industry for what is coming. Check out the innovations:

1. Blockchain

The term blockchain refers to a distributed digital database that uses software algorithms to record and confirm transactions with reliability and anonymity.

The record of these events is shared among multiple parties, and once information is entered, it cannot be altered. Because of this, the technology has great potential to usher in an era of autonomous and more secure digital commerce.

2. Drones

Drones vary widely depending on their size, capacity, and purpose. Some are large and need ample space to take off like helicopters, while others are so compact they fit in the palm of your hand.

Companies are using this technology for a variety of purposes, such as surveillance, research, sports, cinematography, and product delivery. And understanding how these devices can impact your business is part of preparing for the future.

3. 3D printing

3D printing creates three-dimensional objects from digital models by printing successive layers of material. This essential technology uses innovative “inks,” such as plastic, metal, and, more recently, glass and wood, with the potential to turn any space into a 3D model factory.

4. Artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning focus on developing computer programs that can learn, understand, reason, plan, and act when fed with data. Machine learning offers enormous potential for creating relevant products and services.

According to the survey “AI: An Opportunity Amid the Crisis,” released by PwC in December 2020, the crisis caused by the covid-19 pandemic raised awareness of the technology in many organizations, and 94% of respondents believe it will help create more opportunities than threats for their sector.

5. Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of physical objects – such as mobile devices, vehicles, and even household appliances – embedded with sensors, software, and network connectivity. In addition, the network has computing capability that allows it to collect and exchange data and to act on it, usually without human intervention.

6. Augmented reality

Augmented reality (AR) is a visual or audio overlay on the physical world that uses contextualized digital information to extend the user's view of the real world. Smart glasses enabled with the technology help warehouse workers fulfill orders accurately and help aircraft manufacturers assemble planes, for example.

7. Virtual reality

Virtual reality (VR) removes logistical limitations. In a computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional image or environment, users can rely on special equipment to interact with the simulation in a realistic way.

The gaming and entertainment industries are proof of the value of this world-changing technology, which has the potential to transform many other industries, especially those in which workers can be placed in dangerous situations without the risks associated with these activities in the physical world.

8. Robotics

Robots are machines with advanced sensing, control, and intelligence capabilities, used to automate, extend, or support human activities. The robotics market has been growing across a wide range of service applications, which are transforming industrial and non-industrial operations with new capabilities that make human work easier in changing and hazardous environments.
